The 1939 Register

At the start of November “The 1939 Register” was released on the Find My Past website.  This register was a comprehensive survey of the civil population of England and Wales at the outbreak of World War 2.  The survey was taken on 29 September 1939, just 4 weeks after war was declared on Germany.  65,000 enumerators were employed to visit every house in England and Wales and record names, addresses, dates of birth, marital status and occupations of every person.  The information collected was used to issue identity cards, which had to be carried at all times during the war, and to set up Rationing books. Post war the register was used to issue NHS cards when the NHS was born.  After 1939 when a woman married her name was changed on The 1939 Register, thus the register contains both the woman’s married and maiden name.

The register is available to search on Find My Past and can be searched for free, but you see limited information.  However, if you want to see the original entry in its entirety a payment is required.

Because of data protection names of persons who were born after 1915 are hidden, unless they are known to have died. This does mean that many names are not available to search and on the register the data is blacked out.  Even with this limitation the register provides some interesting data. 

I have searched the register and can tell you the following about our family names

I have found 295 family members named on the 1939 register plus 26 women who were later to marry into the family.  The occurrence of the family name is as shown below

I expected the spelling of the surname to be better than on censuses but alas no, there are 22 spelling variations of the surnames occurring (probably even more that haven’t been found).

The name variations are

The most popular family Christian names were William Annie Albert and Dorothy.

The distribution of the family was much as expected with most of the family living in Hampshire (35%) followed by London (14%).  Nearly all the individuals lived south of Birmingham with just 4% living in Warwickshire or further north

From Titheridge to Titheradge

 Frederick Titheridge was the fifth of nine children born to Richard Titheridge and Mary Ann Lasham. He was born on 29 July 1842 in the Droxford area of Hampshire.  On 1851 census he was living at Swanmore, Droxford with his parents and four siblings.

Frederick joined the Royal Navy on 24 April 1860 when aged 18, joining at HMS Britannia in Portsmouth. He enlisted for 10 years and then extended this for another 10 years. On enlistment he was described as 5 foot 5.5inches with brown hair, grey eyes and fresh complexion. Throughout his naval career his conduct was generally good or very good, although in 1865 there is a record of gaol in Cork for “breaking leave”. He served as a stoker in the navy and was discharged from the Royal Navy on 16 January 1880 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

His Record of continuous service shows him serving on the following ships

Having served nearly 20 years in the Navy Frederick disembarked at Sidney New South Wales in January 1880.  The following year he married Martha Hannah Pritchard, who was 18 years his junior. The marriage took place on 4 June 1881 at St Thomas Church, Narrandera, New South Wales over 300 miles from Sydney. Frederick and Martha had 10 children

 Frederick worked in Australia as a railway employee.  Frederick died 17 February 1914 in Molong, New South Wales and Martha died nearly 30 years later on 16 September 1943 in Orange, New South Wales.

Frederick served his entire navy career with the surname Titheridge but when he landed in Australia he spelt his surname Titheradge.  He married under this surname and all his children and descendants took on this new version of the surname, Titheradge. Later generations had no idea they were actually descended from the Titheridge line and that this new spelling variation was only begun in 1880.

Innocent of Manslaughter

On Wednesday 13^th June 1877 the London Daily News reported the proceedings from the Police Courts held in the Guild Hall, London.  They reported the case of John Teatheredge, of 2 Braithwaite Place, Hall Park, Paddington and Arthur Willis Payne who were charged with manslaughter.  John was  the driver of an omnibus belonging to the London General Omnibus Company plying for trade between Paddington and London Bridge, while Arthur was the driver of another omnibus belonging to the same company, but plying for trade between Bayswater and London Bridge.  Both men were charged on remand, before Alderman Nottage, with racing their omnibuses in Newgate Street, London and thereby causing the death of Patrick Twohig, a costermonger, who was in the street at the same time.  The two drivers were committed for manslaughter but were liberated on bail. 

The accident happened on 25^th May 1877 at about 8 o’clock in the evening.  From reading the various accounts of the accident it would appear that the two omnibuses were coming down Newgate Street in the same direction, with Teatheredge’s omnibus kerbside and Payne’s omnibus on the “off side”.  One report says that they were so close that their wheels appeared to be touching.  Teatheredge’s horse is described as stumbling and knocking the man down.  The reports give varying accounts of the speed of the omnibuses, several saying they were speeding with estimates of the speed being anything from 3mph to 20mph!  The passengers on Teatheredge’s bus were consistent in saying they were going 4-5 mph, "barely more than a walking pace". Patrick Twohig died several days after the accident.  When arrested John Teatheredge claimed he was innocent “for the other bus caught his wheels and that was what caused the accident."

A Calendar of Prisoners tried at Assizes Quarter Sessions at Her Majesty's Gaol Newgate shows that John and Arthur were brought into custody “standing indicted for feloniously killing and slaying one Patrik Twohig”. The two drivers were tried at the Old Bailey on 25^th June 1877.  All the evidence was submitted and if you are interested you can read the details at the Old Bailey Proceedings on line.

The prisoners received good character references and witnesses testified to their skill and care when driving.  They were both found NOT GUILTY .

So who is John Teatheredge, who has one of the rarer versions of the family name?

He was born as John Francis Teatheredge in Camberwell London in 1852 one of 4 children born to James Teatheredge and Emily Wing.  John married Elizabeth Hurdle in 1881 at St John the Baptist,  Islington and they had 3 children Alice Maud born 1881, Herbert James born 1882 and Albert Edward born in 1885 died 1886.  John  moved around east London in 1861 and 1871 he was at 12 Orchard Road, Camberwell St Giles. In 1881 he was living at 112 Wenlock -Street ,Shoreditch and 1891 and 1893 he was living in 4 Belham Street, Camberwell where he rented two rooms unfurnished on the first floor.  John died in Camberwell in 1896 aged 44.

John’s occupation remained an omnibus driver / bus driver so no black mark was put by his name from the incidents mentioned above.

Golden weddings anniversaries – diamond weddings anniversaries

Recently I found an obituary on the Internet for William John Titheridge of Penticon, British Columbia, Canada who died on August 27 2015, just shy of his 60th wedding anniversary. The fact that Bill had been married for 59 years made we wonder how many family members have celebrated their golden (50th) or diamond (60th) wedding anniversary or are Bill and wife Norma among the longest married Titheridges, Titheradges, Tidridges etc.

Within my own Meaker family my parents celebrated their diamond wedding and my grandparents celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary.

The challenge this week is for you to tell me family members who have been married for 50 years or more –they can be male or female Titheridges, Titheradges, Tidridges etc. If you email me the information I will start a list - better still if you can add a picture of the happy couple.

Gladys Titheradge (Michael’s Aunt) married Leonard Sach in August 1936.  In 1986 they celebrated their golden wedding with a large family party and then went on to celebrate a diamond wedding in 1996 and finally a 67th wedding anniversary.
